Best practise to provide non-DBAs querying capabilities in SQL200
several of our IT folks so they could query data easily. Some of these folks
have admin priv for non-DBA reasons. Now that querying data is integrated
into the SQL 2005 management studio I am not sure the best way to provide
this function to these users. I don't want to give the full management
studio, especially to those with Admin but no appreciation for DBA tasks.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks

but QALite may do the trick if I that does not work out. The info I found
on it does not mention SQL2005 , just SQL2000, SQL Server7. Any experience
with QALite on SQL2005?

Best Practices Analyzer Modification
actices we could use our own custom "Best Practice" modules to check.
Is there anything like that that can be created for use with the Analyzer? An SDK or anything? Is that something that is planned for the future?
Thanks
The ability to create custom rules and extend BPA has certainly been talked
about and may be something that you can look forward to in a future version.

Best Practices Analyzer Installation Problem
All of the student logins are local administrators, and the Administrators group has full control access to the BPA executable.
How do I fix this?
Thanks,
Sharon
Put the shortcut for BPA in the everyone document folder?
It sounds like a chain of custody control issue, if you log in as user16, you can not use a program installed by user15? If the program requires admin priv, then all users of the program must be admin?
This of course assumes that you really are the admin on the machine and not a "virtual admin" associated with some sys protection programs out there (and viruses of course)?
Have fun :)

Best Practices Analyzer contradicts BOL for SQLSERVERAGENT
The 2005 Best Practices Analyzer (July 2007) contradicts Books Online about what account to run SQLSERVERAGENT under.
BPA says use Network Service Account, BOL explicitly says not to use Network Service Account:
BPA gives a warning saying "SQL Server Service [MY-PC\SQLSERVERAGENT] In Unrecommended Account On Host [MY-PC]. We recommend that the service [SQLSERVERAGENT] on host [MY-PC] be run under Network Service Account. Currently it is designated to run under the account [SOMEDOMAIN\someaccount]."
BooksOnline says "Security Note: Because multiple services can use the Network Service account, it is difficult to control which services have access to network resources, including SQL Server databases. We do not recommend using the Network Service account for the SQL Server Agent service."
So who's right ? BPA or BOL ?
Books online is correct - a non-system account provides more control over access, security.
Just curious...which version of BPA are you running?

sqlBest Practices Analyzer Access Denied Message
Practices Analyzer against a Named Instance of SQL using the AV and Severe
Errors,Unexpected Shutdowns,Datbase File Compression, NO_LOG backups,Error
Log File Size, and Failed Backups rules. I am receiving expected results for
all other rule sets. Any direction or help is appreciated.
If you can post the BPA logs from %PROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft SQL Server Best

Best Practices Analyzer
Hello,
I found in marketing materials, than Best Practices Analyzer is included in installation of SQL 2005. Is it right ? I could not found it.
Any ideas ?
You could get it from link
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displayla%20ng=en&familyid=B352EB1F-D3CA-44EE-893E-9E07339C1F22&displaylang=en
|||But it is for SQL2000 server. I need analyzer for SQL2005 .|||I'm a program manager heading up the next version of Best Practices Analyzer for SQL Server 2005. We are pretty early in the development cycle right now... we'll probably ship second half of this year. Check out this blog post for more information: http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlrem/archive/2006/04/06/570292.aspx.

Thank you
Hey Clint,
I'm the Program Manager responsible for the next version of Best Practices
Analyzer which will support SQL Server 2005. We are very early in the
development process and would like to get some customer input. If you'd
like to put in your two cents, go to the SQL Relational Engine Manageability
Team's blog and leave a comment on this post:

Hi Jim
BPA just tunnels through the connection information.
Can you connect from query analyzer?
Can you please provide more info on the error that you are getting?
Thanks,
- Christian

|||From your post seems that repository database was created successfully
during setup. This would tell me that your managed stack is working well.
(i.e. SqlClient)
Can you try to login with profiler attached capturing logon and error
events, and verify 1) whether a connection is being established and 2)
whether any error is being reported?
Thanks,
- Christian

Best Practices Analyzer
When will we be able to create custom rules?
Also need to be able to isolate to specific databases.
Thanks for your feedback Bruce.
We've considered user-defined rules and we intend to do it, but not in the
short term (i.e. not in the next release of BPA). Be assured we do have
extensibility in mind.
To scan only a few specific databases, you can type the name of the
databases you want as part of the registration of a SQL Server instance.

Best Practices Analyzer
I have downloaded and installed "SQL Server 2000 Best Practices Analyzer" from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=B352EB1F-D3CA-44EE-893E-9E07339C1F22&displaylang=en
on to my Windows XP machine where I have "SQL Server 2000 Personal addition"
is installed. The installation went fine. I created a report by connecting to
a server. Now, I want to print the report but I can't.
The document "MSBPA_User_Guide.doc" that comes with it says that I should be
able to print report by clicking on the "print report" icon on "Compliance
Reports" page but THERE IS NO "PRINT REPORT" icon.
Am I dreaming ? or what document says really doesn't match what the software
does ? or is this a limitation on Windows XP ?
Thanks for any help.Hi DXC:
you should have just four choices on the report form:
[Remove Report], [Copy Report], [Previous Report] and [Next Report].
To print a report you should use the [Copy] option and then paste it ona a
Word document or on any other editor you like.
This action let you generate a document containig the reèportsummary. to
Print the details you should copy any of them (or just the details you are
interested for) one at a time.

data source: anyway you have to peek each detail you are interested to.
Surely you can obtain a much better result in terms of presentation and
usability.
