Best Project Template & "The View of the event class could not be materialized"

Can someone explain this statement to me. "The View of the event class could not be materialized". I get it when I try to do a build of my Instance.

Also, yesterday I used CopySample to prepare an instance for my project. I'm not sure if this is the right way to go.

Is there a better template to use or process to follow to create a complete project (including Visual Studio Build Scripts, etc...)

Thanks

...Ray

Ray,
"The View of the event class could not be materialized" is a runtime error, not a build-time error. Are you sure you saw this while building your instance?

Here's what the error means:
Before SQL-NS executes the rules in your application (match rules or chronicle rules) it first builds views of the events and subscriptions tables. These views provide the input data for the rules: they contain only the events and subscriptions against which the rule should operate in any given firing. The error means that something when wrong during the process of setting up these views. Usually the rest of the error message provides more detail on the problem. If you could include the complete message, we'd be able to diagnose the problem better. The most common cause of this is a timeout, which can happen if the event batch is huge.

Also, please tell us what version of SQL-NS you're using - is it SQL 2000 (NS2.0) or SQL 2005? If 2005, which build are you using?

Regarding your question about the best template, you can certainly use the ones provided with the samples. However, this does involve starting from a pre-existing application and changing/removing things to make it do what you want. In my book (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0672326647/) I describe how to set up a "minimal" instance and application (with just the elements required to get it to build) and then add the code you want piece by piece. The book's CD-ROM provides all the necessary files and instructions on setting this up.

Hope this helps.

Best Damn Clustering Class...Period!

I had the opportunity to attend a Windows 2003 Clustering Class offered by
Rod (and Russ) in NYC. In my eleven years of IT, I have attended 8 or so
classes. This was the best class I have ever attended - period! The way
that Rod and Russ have designed this course, I wish MSL (Microsoft Learning)
would adopt that format. It just flowed perfectly. It also gave you the
choice of which order you wanted to do the labs in, without affecting the
desired outcomes. They have put a lot of work into making the one of the
best classes ever.
My only regret is that I could never deliver this courseware to students to
allow them to have the same experience I had since it is not for resale. You
can only take it with Rod or Russ, but that is so worth it. The only other
courseware to come close to this level of completeness was the 827 and 828
kits. I love those classes, too!
Anyway, if you need a vacation and want to take the best damn class you will
ever take, you must take Rod and Russ' class.
(Now let me tell you how much I really liked it!)

Actually, we are talking about that. Our UK class will be a Train the
Trainer class for anyone that wants to train in Europe using our materials
and meets our standards.
We would love to do the same thing in Sinapore for Asia-Pacific market.
However, we don't have any contacts there to arrange a class and market in
the area.

beginning SQL

I purchased SQL Server 2005 and intend to take a class this month. I have installed it. How do I get started trying it out? I took an online tutorial, but I don't understand the mechanics of accessing the db to start with or if I even have a db to work with. Any suggestions?

Beginners question to coding

ok this is for a class assignment so if anyone doesnt want to help thats cool, but its just a small extra credit assignment and we havent gone over it in class and and the book, well is confusing to say the least so here are my questions:

What is the total weight of different colored parts?

ok so i have a parts table, with pcolor and pweight in it but i am unsure how to code that, here is kinda what i think it might be, i have no real way to check to see if it is correct though:

Select sum pweight
from parts
where distinct pcolor

looks horribly wrong so any help is appreciated. here is another one:

What colored part has total weight greater than 8 units?

select pcolor
from parts
where sum pweight > 8

?
i dunno lol.

there is a hint that says to use "GROUP BY" and "HAVING" but i dont see how that fits in... any ideas?I'll put the keywords in the proper order; you figure out the rest:

SELECT
FROM
WHERE
GROUP BY
HAVING

Notes:
1. I don't think you need the WHERE clause in this particular exercise at all.
2. You won't need HAVING in the first part

HAVING was just so totally cool when I first learned how to use it. It is enormously useful at times.

I'll give you another hint - no need for distinct.
